• The largest actively managed Bitcoin-only financial products include ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) with $1.49B, Fidelity Investments Advantage Bitcoin ETF (FBTC) with $160.4M, VanEck Bitcoin Strategy Fund (XBTF) with 66.19M, Purpose Investments Bitcoin Yield ETF (BTCY) with $54.15M, Zeltner & Co. Bitcoin Volatility Premium AMC with $40M, and Simplify Bitcoin Strategy PLUS Income ETF (MAXI) with $32.95M.

The institutions are here, and they are buying the dip. Blackrock, the largest asset manager in the world with $10 trillion in assets, just announced its second blockchain ETF, one month after the debut of its first one. Goldman Sachs took on principal risk in a crypto OTC trade for the first time with Galaxy Digital. Goldman Sachs now has a part of its website dedicated to the investment case for cryptocurrencies and the metaverse. The largest hedge fund in the world with $140 billion in assets under management, Bridgewater Associates, announced they were backing a Bitcoin fund. Fidelity is weighing a plan to allow its brokerage customers—some 34.4 million individual investors—to trade the world’s largest cryptocurrency. Citadel, Brevan Howard, Investment Bank Cowen—soon, the list of institutional investors in crypto will be longer than the list not involved. Not only will these institutions bring liquidity to the cryptocurrency space, but they also hold significant power in local politics and governments. Finance, insurance, and real estate lobbyist groups in the US spent $539 million in 2020 on influencing regulation and public policy. 

As institutions join the blockchain ecosystem, the demand for institutional-grade infrastructure is growing. The largest global banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and DBS Bank, have invested in educating themselves on digital assets, and many are already venturing into offering products and services.

The entire technology stack from traditional finance integrates the necessary tools to handle cryptocurrencies. There are custodian banks, market makers, paying agents, and clearing houses establishing themselves as trusted intermediaries for blockchain-based assets.

However, some key questions remain. How much of the cryptocurrency market capitalization and daily trading volume is done by institutions versus retail investors? The answer to this question helps us understand if crypto is mainly a retail phenomenon or if institutions already own a considerable chunk of the market. This report investigates the direction of the capital flow. Are professional traders currently buying or selling Bitcoin? Are institutions primarily interested in Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other methods for gaining exposure to blockchain technology, such as private equity or mergers and acquisitions? Do they plan to increase their exposure to blockchain over the next 12 months? 

To answer these questions, Cointelegraph Research took a data-driven approach in the second annual Institutional Demand for Cryptocurrencies Global Survey 2022 Report. To gain a deeper understanding of how professional investors feel about blockchain assets, this 60+ page research report presents 32 questions about crypto assets answered by 84 wealthy investors across Asia, the US, and Europe. TLDR - 43% currently hold digital assets, and 19% plan to buy them in the future. However, their favorite cryptocurrency for future investment was unexpected. Key highlights include:

• Cointelegraph’s second annual survey found that 43% of professional investors currently hold digital assets, and 19% plan to buy them in the future. Three surveys were done on professional investment in cryptocurrencies in 2022, including studies conducted by Cointelegraph, Bitwise, and Nickel Asset Management. On average, 45% of the institutions surveyed have exposure to cryptocurrencies. 

• In total, the respondents manage $316 billion in assets, 3.3% of which, or approximately $10.43 billion, is invested into cryptocurrencies. 

• Institutional investors, including public corporations and governments, own 1.39 million+ BTC, equal to 7.2% of the circulating supply. 

• Professional investors primarily hold Bitcoin (94%) and Ether (75%). Institutions are also interested in security tokens (31%) and stablecoins (31%). Smaller holdings included Polkadot (DOT) (25%), Solana (SOL) (13%) and Litecoin (LTC) (13%). Several investors mentioned they are also interested in publicly traded blockchain stocks. 

• Institutional investors are more likely to buy Ether than Bitcoin in the next 12 months. 62% of investors say Ether is on their buy list, compared to only 54% for Bitcoin. 

• A slim majority of investors (55%) prefer to hold cryptocurrencies directly. Interestingly, professional investors prefer to buy a regulated fund before buying structured products or trading futures. Active strategies beat out passive strategies by a narrow margin. 

• There are more than 800 digital asset funds across 80 countries.

• The total value of all cryptocurrencies sits just below $2 trillion currently and the total value locked (TVL) is more than $250 billion for all DeFi projects.

• Ethereum blockchain is generating more annual protocol revenue than Bitcoin. Ethereum is producing $2.2 billion in transaction fees and $19 billion in block rewards. Bitcoin’s blockchain is generating the second-highest protocol revenue with $450 million in transaction fees and $14 billion in mining rewards (328k BTC). Then come the smaller fish including $498 million on Algorand, $7 million on Polkadot, and $2.2 million on Solana.

• Price-to-sales (P/S) ratios are useful for comparing blockchains. The price-to-sales ratio compares a protocol’s market cap to its revenue. A low ratio could imply that the protocol is undervalued and vice versa. The price-to-sales ratio is an ideal valuation method, especially for early-stage protocols, which often have little or no revenue. Can you guess which blockchain has the lowest P/S ratio out of the five analyzed? Surprisingly, it’s Algorand. Algorand’s price compared to how much revenue the network is generating is 22x. The second most underpriced P/S ratio is Ethereum with 215x followed by Bitcoin with 2,200x. Solana’s is the worst with a P/S ratio of almost 40,000x!

• However, Solana actually has more daily active users than Bitcoin. Solana has 1 million daily active users, and Bitcoin only has 950. That is unbelievable given the fact that Solana just came on the scene, and Bitcoin is Solana’s great-great-great crypto grandma!

• Cash App, a service developed and operated by Jack Dorsey’s Block, is building an easy-to-use application that allow people to send fiat currencies over the Bitcoin Lightning network. This may put Bitcoin back in first place for the global decentralized finance market. The Lightning Network has $150 million in network capacity.

• Ethereum’s network has been at full capacity and has the highest average fees of any of the Layer 1 blockchains ($28 per transaction).

Is security tokenization the next killer application of blockchain? In an interview with Raiffeisen Bank International, the bankers leading their blockchain research hub stated that indeed, by 2030, most securities will have been tokenized. To gain a deeper understanding of how blockchain technology can transform traditional stock exchanges, the Crypto Research Report and Cointelegraph compiled a dataset of all security token offerings and found that almost $5 billion was raised in 2020. 

The report explains how bond and stock tokenization works, how many assets have already been tokenized, what returns they have provided, and how they are regulated in different countries.

• A recent trend is the self-custody of securities and the reemergence of bearer financial instruments. Tokenization of financial instruments allows investors to remove securities from an exchange and send them to a new exchange with a private key. 

• Exchanges can attract investors to deposit securities by offering them interest on their deposits for lending their securities to the exchange, which will in turn lend the shares to other borrowers. Exchanges may also allow investors to use their securities as collateral for loans or margin trading. This will drastically change the demand for securities, as fewer investors will sell and trigger taxable events in order to acquire liquidity. The demand will also increase for attractive securities, as a global pool of investors will now be able to easily invest in securities in other countries.

• KPMG and WEF project that the security token market will grow to $8 trillion by 2025. The German digital asset platform for institutional investors, Finoa, predicts that the global security token market will have $9.5 trillion in assets under management by 2025.

This landmark study on institutional demand for crypto assets in the German-speaking countries was written by eight authors including Demelza Hays, Professor Dr. Philipp Sandner, Professor Dr. Alfred Taudes, Dr. Karin Lorez, Pascal Hügli, Matthias Reder, Matthias Langer, and Lara Olms. In six chapters and more than 70 pages, the authors provide a critical and academic perspective on the legal, technical, and economic aspects of crypto assets. Key topics covered in the report:

• 36% of professional investors have bought blockchain-inspired assets before. The majority of respondents invested in 2018 or after and allocate less than 5% of their portfolio to crypto.

• Out of the remaining 64% that have not yet invested, 39.29% plan to invest. This results in 61.15% of investors in the survey either already owning digital assets or planning to buy in the future.

• Around 88% of respondents are exposed to Bitcoin. However, institutional investors appear to be increasingly interested in security tokens. Out of the 39.29% of investors that plan to invest in the future, security tokens were more popular than Ethereum and other alternative coins.

An important observation is that institutional investors that have invested in digital assets have distinctly different portfolios compared to ones that have no exposure to this asset class. Digital asset investors have significantly fewer bonds, more commodities, and more cash reserves than investors with no exposure to digital assets. This is in line with the ethos of the industry — lower trust in government bonds, higher trust in sound money, and growing cash reserves in expectation of a recession.

The total assets under management managed by the 55 asset allocators that participated in the survey was over €719 billion, which is more than double the entire market capitalization of the digital asset market. Some retail investors hold cryptographic assets for speculation rather than for use as a medium of exchange. They hope to “front-run” Wall Street by buying in before bigger pockets enter the market. Putting the fear of missing out aside, there are genuine reasons to be excited about institutional investors joining the space. Institutional investors hold the majority of the world’s wealth. The sheer size of the wealth managed by professional investors like pension funds, university endowments, and insurance companies is enough to have a dramatic impact on the entire digital asset industry if they enter the market. For years, there have been rumors that institutional investors were starting to buy cryptocurrencies, and now, the most recent academic survey provides evidence that this rumor is true.
